Additional Information

For Businesses and Other Organizations

In the past, businesses could protect their accounts from fraud by using traditional accounting controls. In today’s business environment, the simple act of opening an email attachment or visiting a website could introduce malware in to your organization and leave your business the victim of payment fraud.

Businesses all across the United States have suffered large financial losses from a crime called Corporate Account Takeover (CATO). CATO is a form of corporate identity theft where cyber thieves gain control of a business’ bank account by stealing employee passwords, token codes and other valid credentials. Thieves then initiate wire and ACH transactions to move money to accounts utilized by other thieves who often withdraw the funds before the business realizes their funds are stolen. In turn, the thieves’ quick actions to withdrawal the funds may make it impossible for us to help you recover the money stolen from your account.

Protecting your accounts is a partnership. ACNB Bank offers multiple security features to protect your accounts, but certain steps must also be performed by your business to ensure the security features function at optimal levels. When performed together as part of a layered security strategy, your activities can be guarded by reasonable security standards.

How can CATO impact your Business?

Criminals use social engineering and phishing to lure employees into clicking links or attachments in emails, clicking on malicious advertising banners on websites, or they may even call your place of business and pose as a trusted vendor to trick employees in to installing malicious software on business computers. The malicious software then captures keystrokes and/or screenshots of employee online banking activity and can take over the employee’s online banking session, allowing the criminal to alter transactions conducted from your online account.

Awareness of how company computers can become infected is crucial. The more knowledgeable you and your staff are, the more prepared you will be to protect your business.
