Romance is in the Air… Or Is It a Scam? How to Protect Yourself From Romance Scams

January 30, 2026
Romance scams are on the rise, and they do not just happen to “other people.” These scams can affect anyone, regardless of age, especially as more relationships begin online. Understanding how romance scams work and knowing the warning signs can help you avoid becoming a victim.
What Is a Romance Scam?
A romance scam occurs when a fraudster creates a fake online profile to form a relationship with someone, often through social media, dating apps, or messaging platforms. Their goal is to gain trust and eventually convince the victim to send money or share sensitive personal information.
Scammers often “love bomb” their target by offering constant attention, affection, and promises of a future together. These relationships can feel very real and may continue for weeks, months, or even years before the scammer asks for money. In some cases, the scammer will send the victim a fraudulent ACH (an external deposit) or counterfeit check and ask the victim to forward some or all of the funds on. Unfortunately, when it’s determined the external deposit or check was fraudulent, it’s the victim who’s stuck with the financial loss.
Common Red Flags of a Romance Scam
Being aware of common warning signs can help you spot a romance scam before it causes financial or emotional harm. Some red flags include:
- Receiving a friend request or message from someone with no mutual connections
- Requests for money related to illness, legal fees, business opportunities, or travel expenses
- Reluctance or refusal to meet in person.
- Attempts to move the conversation to a different platform, such as a secure or encrypted messaging app
If something does not feel right, it is important to pause and take a closer look at the situation.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones
Taking a few precautionary steps can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to a romance scam:
- Never send money to someone you have not met in person or do not personally know
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, slow down and reassess before taking action
- Never share personal or financial information, such as online banking credentials, bank account numbers, passwords, or Social Security numbers
- Use a reverse image search to check profile photos. You can upload an image at images.google.com to see if it appears on other profiles or websites
- Talk through the situation with a trusted friend or family member before sending money or sensitive information
Scammers often rely on secrecy and urgency, so involving someone you trust can help bring clarity to the situation.
Stay Informed and Stay Protected
Romance scams are just one of many types of fraud targeting consumers today. Staying informed is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your finances.
