Celebrating National Volunteer Week in Carroll County MD This is Community Banking in Carroll County Maryland

April 18, 2021
It’s National Volunteer Week and Community Banking Month. As a community bank, we believe in giving back and volunteering in our shared community. Here are some ways we lend a helping hand.
A Heart for Giving and Volunteer Service
In 2020:
- Staff members contributed 857 volunteer hours to 25 community organizations with four staff members serving as volunteer leaders with one or more organizations.
- Supported our local United Way by contributing $1,116 through the 2020/2021 Employee Giving Campaign.
- The Bank financially supported 40 community organizations through donations, sponsorships and program book advertising.
- The Bank launched a special initiative---Helping Hands---during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing nearly 1,200 meals prepared by four restaurant and catering businesses that are customers which were then distributed to people in need through four local community organizations. Staff members and Directors personally contributed to this effort, which supplemented the Bank’s overall commitment to assist those in need within our local communities.

“As a Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County volunteer leader, I take pride in helping families understand that they have a support system behind them in their local community. Seeing the faces of each family member when they are approved to receive a home has been some of the most rewarding moments of my life. Through this affiliation, I have gained many wonderful friendships and a renewed respect for the Carroll County community. I am also very passionate about volunteering with the SCBA because I believe in the organization’s mission to give back to our local students by providing scholarships to help them pursue careers in business, finance or entrepreneurship. This volunteer opportunity has benefitted me as a community banker by providing the means to connect with local business owners through the organization’s many networking activities.” - Tonya Boczek

“Prior to my banking career, I served in the U.S. Army and, therefore, have a genuine appreciation for the way the Red Cross helps the Armed Forces all over the world. Over the years, I have given 84 units of blood through the Red Cross and continue to do so today. Since joining the organization as an active volunteer and leader in 2001, I have spoken to many groups of people about the Red Cross’ mission, helped raise funds through various events, and participated in hands-on volunteer activities such as the Sound the Alarm campaign. The satisfaction of helping others in the community is the reason I continue to serve as an active volunteer with the Red Cross and other organizations in Carroll County, MD. I meet many wonderful people through these activities and find it very gratifying to help others in need. I always say, ‘if you want to live in a great community, you should get involved to make sure you help make it great’. I have made many lifelong friendships as a volunteer and it has come back to me tenfold with business relationships that have contributed to my success as a banker.” – Drew Heck

Serving as Co-Chair of the Pink Fling event that benefits the Center for Breast Health at Carroll Hospital. Member of the MBA Banking School Board of Trustees and faculty member since 2010.
“Before joining the CCFS Board of Trustees, I drove by its warehouse on Distillery Drive in Westminster numerous times a week. However, it wasn’t until I actually stopped by for a tour, that I realized what a gem we have right in our backyard. I quickly learned that CCFS is much more than a local food pantry, and that its strength depends on the unselfish acts of generosity from our community, friends and neighbors. Through my volunteer involvement with this organization, I have met a lot of wonderful people who tirelessly give of their time to volunteer at our three food banks. These friendships and acquaintances have truly blessed my life and continue to mold me into the person I am today. I also have a passion for supporting women and their health and serve as a volunteer leader for the annual Pink Fling fundraising event that benefits the Center for Breast Health at Carroll Hospital. Additionally, as a 2001 graduate of the MBA Banking School and 2005 graduate of the MBA Advanced School of Bank Management, I am a huge supporter of the MBA and have played an instrumental role in developing and implementing a financial literacy program to be used as a resource for member banks. Over the years, I have led presentations with numerous students in pre-school, elementary, middle, high and even college. I served on MBA’s Financial Education Council for well over a decade and played a big part in developing the annual Financial Education Awards program. Under MBA’s direction and guidance, I spoke in front of the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis on the importance of having financial literacy become part of the state’s graduating curriculum for students. This experience has proven invaluable in my career as a community banker.” – Lisa Monthley
