APRIL 2008

COMMUNITY SHRED EVENT

Cars were lined up out the parking lot and onto V-Twin Drive for the Bank's Community Shred Event, which took place on Saturday, April 19. The event, free for the general public, was held at the Bank's Operations Center in Gettysburg. The event was held in conjunction with Shred-It, the Bank's third party vendor for shredding confidential documents. The old, personal, confidential documents that people brought to be shredded turned into 8,000 pounds of confetti-sized, recyclable material, which will be reused to manufacture household paper products. The response from the public was incredible; unfortunately, cars had to be turned away due to a concern of not getting through all the documents to be shredded. In fact, the shredding started a half hour early at 8:30 a.m., and even though the last car left at 11:00 a.m., the shredding continued until 1:15 p.m., more than two hours beyond the original end-time. Another shredding event is being planned for the fall. The Bank will announce the details once they've been finalized.

BRETHREN HOME EXPO

On April 22, Bank staff members participated in the Annual Brethren Home Expo in New Oxford. This event was targeted towards the Brethren Home Retirement Village residents and staff. A table was set up to greet attendees and each person had an opportunity to put their name in to win a bouquet of flowers displayed on the Bank's table. Seminars regarding Trust and Identity Theft were conducted by Karen Arthur, Trust, and Jeff Pottorff, Compliance, respectively. Many thanks to those who planned, set up and manned the table at this event.

NATIONAL TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE DAY

Area students are learning their financial ABCs during presentations by Adams County National Bank staff members which began in April and continued through May. These presentations are in conjunction with the Twelfth Annual National Teach Children to Save Day on April 29. National Teach Children to Save Day was initiated by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation (ABAEF) in 1997 to raise awareness of the need to improve financial literacy among American youth, as well as to help students become informed consumers of the financial marketplace. The ABAEF includes information on its Web site that parents and teachers can use to teach money skills to children. This information can be accessed at www.aba.com/ABAEF/consumers.

Adams County National Bank staff members made several presentations at schools within the Bank's market areas. The schools involved in National Teach Children to Save Day included Annunciation BVM School in McSherrystown, Conewago Township Elementary in Hanover, Mount Rock Elementary and Newville Elementary in Newville, Northern Elementary School in Dillsburg, Rolling Acres Elementary in Littlestown, and Sacred Heart School in Hanover. Approximately 702 students participated in these presentations. Each presentation was tailored to the specific grade level participating in the program. Topics featured in the presentations conducted by the Bank's staff members included the importance of saving, how to save, as well as how to prioritize “wants” versus “needs”. These topics were presented via discussions, stories, videos, and hands-on activities.
