ACNB BANK HOLDS
 CYBER FRAUD SEMINAR

GETTYSBURG, PA, November 21 --- ACNB Bank held a Cyber Fraud Seminar in which representatives of the Bank's local municipality customers learned how to protect their computer systems. The timing of the seminar coincided with National Protect Your Identity Week of October 17-23.

“It's crucial that local municipalities, businesses and consumers alike adopt ways to prevent fraud and protect their account information,” said Dennis R. Hollinger, First Vice President & Business Development Manager of ACNB Bank.

Scott E. Hartlaub, Vice President & Information Security Officer of ACNB Bank, agreed. “We work diligently to protect our customers from fraud and identity theft by using a combination of safeguards to protect customer information, such as rigorous security standards, strict privacy policies and employee training. But it's important that people, businesses and organizations do their part by following a few simple precautions.”

Below are some tips for protecting your information:

  • Maintain firewalls, anti-spyware and anti-virus software on your computer and keep them up-to-date.
  • Protect your PINs and passwords. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and characters when possible for your passwords and change them periodically. Do not write passwords down and do not store them on your computer.
  • Review your accounts regularly for any unauthorized charges.
  • Shred or tear up statements and other personal information. Criminals may be able to get access to your accounts and personal information by dumpster diving---retrieving canceled checks, receipts and/or bank statements from dumpsters or trash bins.
  • Keep an eye out for any missing mail, particularly account statements and bills that do not arrive when expected.
  • Consumers can order a free copy of their credit report once a year from each of the credit reporting agencies to ensure accuracy. Visit the Federal Trade Commission's authorized web site, www.AnnualCreditReport.com, for your free credit report.
  • Choose to do business with companies you know are reputable, whether the transactions are in person or online.
  • Do not respond to unsolicited requests for personal information.
  • Report any suspected fraud immediately to your bank, as well as the fraud units of the three credit reporting agencies: Equifax at 1-800-997-2493; Experian at 1-888-397-3742; and, Trans Union at 1-800-680-7289.
